Please list here your Idea of a MultiAthlon. It should be a set of minimum 3 disciplines

Comment

To start here I think it is a good idea to provide an overview what disciplines we actually have :)

Trackrace: 100m, 400m, 800m, OneFeet, WheelWalk, IUF Slalom, 4x100 relay, Track coasting, Track gliding, 700C race, Unlimited Track race

Roadrace: 10k, Marathon, 100k

Jump: Highjump over the bar, Highjump on podest, Longjump

Muni: Downhill, Uphill, Cross Country, Slopestyle, North Shore, CycleCross

Freestyle: Individual, Pairs, Group, Std. Skill, X-Style

Urban: Flatland, Street, Trial, Speed Trial

Team: Hockey, Basketball

Other: Dowhill coasting, Downhill gliding, Stillstand, Ropeskipping, Slow forwards, Slow Backwards

So a full decathlon crossing over all sections could be for example:

100m, WheelWalk, 10K, Highjump over the bar, Downhill, Cross Country, Std. Skill (3 Skills), Speed Trail, Basketball (3 shots), Slow backwards :)

Now its your turn!

I like Mirjam's list. My only rough spot with it is the basketball part. Basketball is not a shooting contest (Biathlon, anyone?  :-P ). Maybe a basketball portion could be a little one-on-one; first to score 3 baskets, for instance.

I agree with you John, however, I see the following problem: If you play one-on-one you always have a winner and a loser, so you have maximun two possibilities for ranking, either you're first or second. The same problem is with the three shots (you either score three, two, one or none -> you become first, second, third or fourth).

I just had another idea coming into my mind: what about a parcours in Basketball or even better Hockey? You could make different items (such as doing a slalom with the hockey stick, balancing the tennis ball on the stick, lifting the ball over something, scoring a goal, passing etc.) There you could either time the riders or give points -> various results and easier ranking

For it is not easy to embed the team sport here, the 3 basket shots was just an idea as Mirjams parcours also. A Multiathlon can exist without team sport but it could be nice to have some ball action also inside. To do 3 shots sounds just simple to realize for me. Play one-on-one is sensles as Mirjam point out.

I like Mirjam's suggestion for a good starting point, but would change a bit.

100m, IUF Slalom, 10k, high jump over bar, cross country, cyclocross, trials, basketball (10 shots), stillstand, hockey obstacle course

I left out a Freestyle category as it is a judged event.  All of the others listed are based on time, or in the case of basketball, high jump, and trials- scores.

Admittedly the one issue I see with this is the Standard/Unlimited classes for rankings in both the 10k and Cyclocross.

The hockey obstacle course could be a timed event where cones have to be navigated and shots taken on a goal (empty or with a stationary obstacle for objectivity).

I think with a format such as this too, the basketball and hockey could be reserved as MultiAthlon events and restricted to those in the overall competition.  They could even be done at the end of the competition as a non-finals final where the competitors would have a chance to hang out and compete against only those in the MultiAthlon.

I'm not convinced team sports like hockey and basketball should be included in a competition that is decided by an individual. For example, track decathlon does not include relay races nor any other team events. It is my impression the goal of a *athlon competition is to distinguish the best aggregate individual performances from a list of events that represent the combined skills which embody the sport as a whole. If that is the case I don't see how it is possible to fairly and accurately evaluate an individuals performance in a team sport and translate that into a meaningful score as a single person. Professional sports teams have tried this for decades based on an individual players salary, and are usually inaccurate.

I could be wrong, perhaps I missed an earlier discussion. If so please set me straight.

BTW: I'm not dissing team sports, I love team sports. I just don't see how they fit here.
